News: Oklahoma School changes it's policies...and apologizes (a day late)

The simple thought that this beautiful little girls hair was deemed not "presentable" is ridiculous!

The Curly Revolution applauds her parents for taking a stand and not conforming to one institutions opinions. It's sad that the institution was her ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!!

“I wanted to show Tiana how much support she has not only from women and women and color, but from people around the world.” ~ Lana Boone, 26, a Silver Spring, Md.- based natural hair advocate and founder of Kurly Klips.

Hair Relaxer sales declined?

@curlyrEVOLution fact:
"Hair relaxer sales decline 26% over the past five years" reports Mintel

"The natural hair trend is driving an increase in sales of styling products such as styling moisturizers, setting lotions, curl creams, pomades, etc., but the increase has caused the relaxer segment to decline in sales," says Tonya Roberts, multicultural analyst at Mintel. "A look at expenditures from 2008-2013 shows steady growth in the Black haircare category for all categories except relaxers/perms."

Sheryl Underwood gets "Nasty" on the TALK about "Natural Hair"

*In the clip above from her CBS show “The Talk,” Sheryl Underwood spoke out about “nappy” “Afro” hair during a discussion about Heidi Klum saving her children’s hair after it had been cut.
Klum’s children with ex-husband Seal have “huge Afros,” as she described them. Underwood responded, “Why would you save Afro hair?” She went on to imply that hair like that wasn’t desirable and woman in a hair shop would never ask for that “curly, nappy, beady” hair.

Sheryl's knee jerk reaction may have gotten her in hot water with her fans. What do you think?

What would you do?

This isn't happening in the United States, yet. Women are being robbed with scissors in Venezuela for their hair! WTW?

The thieves are known as Piranhas...

"CAN I PET YOUR FRO?"

We agree that getting the word out about Natural Hair is a beautiful thing...but have we taken this too far? Share your thoughts...

If I was in their shoes, I would not have made this choice. I do not like being touched by strangers and I don't want nasty, grabby hands all up in this luxurious nappy goodness. And ultimately, I don't like the idea of this "exhibit." You do not need to touch me nor should you ask to touch me because I look "different." I am not under any contract to "explain" my hair nor do I have to educate curious White folks about it--which seems to be the driving force behind this project. Google can do that for them and anyone else curious about my hair and hair like mine. And I assure you the Google Gods are more than willing to help on that quest. ~Alice in Nappyland article can be read here

From a recent interview with a supporter of the Curly Revolution;

As an African-American woman with curls that I am just now beginning to embrace, I have been met with many questions from my not-so African-American, not-so-curly counterparts concerning my hair. Everything from, "You have such nice hair for a black girl" to "Your curls are so beautiful; what are you mixed with?" to the infamous "can I touch it?". While I can understand the curiosity of those whose hair is different than mine, I do not like to be objectified by said curiosity. I believe that I can understand what this exhibit in New York hopes to address, however, I also think it does further objectify Black Women and the differences in our hair. Black Women, in my opinion, should not be put on display like animals in a zoo. I honestly still don't get the fascination. Natural Hair, Dreads, Relaxed- beauty is beauty and has every right to be admired, and is a form of art. And with most precious art, it is best to be admired and not touched.  ~Kenra

Via Writing While Black

It really is a journey to go natural in every sense of the word. I don’t know if women are doing it as some kind of new trend. But if so, there’s far worse trends we could be following.
It’s just hair, but it’s not just hair. It does, however, become problematic when we are concerned with other women’s hair choices. And why any man is concerned about how we wear our hair is beyond me.
I’m less concerned about our hair and more about women knowing their worth. With or without natural hair, we need to celebrate one another for who we are in all of our versatility. ~Bene Viera

The Architecture of a Great Hair Cut

Like any great building, a great haircut has to be built on a solid foundation otherwise the haircut will collapse. I'm a hairstylist that enjoys the art of creating beautiful haircuts. One of my favorite educators from Aveda's Global Creative Team is Antoinette Beenders. I attended an advanced cutting and styling class with her and she used an analogy I really liked. She said, "Building a foundation into the hair is much like stacking bricks or pouring cement.  If there is no foundation laid we can't build anything on top.  As hairstylists, we imagine ourselves on a scaffold redistributing or adding weight to the hair with our scissors, razor or clippers."  Antoinette's message was an ahh haa moment for me many years ago and has stayed with me throughout my career .  I love being creative with hair color and use advanced techniques, but shaping the hair has always been a passion of mine. Take a look at one of the worlds most famous buildings, most people can recognize and know exactly where it is located because of its unique shape.

Mik So Chic is known for her striking beauty in the Arts and Fashion community here in Vegas, take a look at her recent shape and color and share your thoughts.

Alnaturalhair via Twitter Salon Review

http://alnaturalhair.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/i-whip-my-hair-salon-review/

Out of the blue India came into my life.  I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing young lady that found me on Naturallycurly.com salon finder.  India has combination curly hair with a mixture of African American and Indian heritage.  Her hair is 3c/4a fine and thick in density. Not only did we discuss similar natural hair tragedies, but discussed a possible natural hair summit here in Las Vegas.  Thank you India for bringing an energetic and inspirational push for me to become more active in the Las Vegas Natural hair community.  I look forward to creating a You Tube tutorial with you and educating more naturals on how to care for their hair in the desert. You Rock!

As a 40 year old hair stylist of 20+ years, I find that Middle-Aged Women sit in my chair often times posing the question "am I too old for longer hair?" My response has always been and will always be "its not about your age, its about how you feel while your wearing longer hair. If you feel fabulous and wear it with confidence then who cares what the baby boomers think?

Farouk Systems wins $300 Million Settlement

Finally, Farouk Systems, a beauty company wins a legal battle over identity theft. This is the largest judgment ever issued for trademark infringement.    Basically, impostors have stolen internet domain names and also created fake CHI products and Flatirons and sold them under the name CHI for dirt cheap.  Not only have these products ruined a lot of hair, but  as a salon owner I've lost potential sales of legitimate products and tools.

Congrats Farouk Systems! You deserve it!

Pin up Looks and Fall "Foilage"

I've received several requests at my studio salon this week for 40's and 50's pin up hair styles to wear to special events. My question is: What's the push for pinup hairstyles? Is Katie Perry responsible for bringing this look back into pop culture?

What about Rockabilly's?  The original term came from a genre of music that has now evolved into a counter-culture of music, style, tattoos, vintage clothing and of course pin up inspired hair.

(yellowbullet.com)

This time of year brings about a different vibe all together when it comes to hair fashion. Color trends go to darker shades of blonde highlights and richer, warmer reds and brunettes.  Lengths become shorter as necklines rise for women and men tend to grow the hair longer to keep those handsome heads warm in the fall and winter months.  I'm one of the few women that likes to add hair extensions during the cooler season to change up my looks.

(the above photos were pulled from google images)

(In this photo I've added clip-in hair extensions on the sides and back and eyelash extensions)
My inspiration comes from classic looks that have been staples for me over time, sleek chignons, big curly ponytail hairpieces and long clip-in hair extensions.I seem to always go with what works for my face shape and body type.  But, I do enjoy staying current with the latest trends in fashion from the runways, magazines, music videos and my latest find http://stylepantry.com/. Lastly, I love taking advanced coloring and cutting classes to keep my skills sharp and keep my clients happy.

While I brush up on my 40's and 50's pin up styles for this season, what inspires you to change or enhance your looks at this time of year, I'd love to hear?

Happy Autumn
