CUSH Cosmetics Product Review

Immediately I noticed how soft, and hydrated my hair felt after one use. Cleansed with Hydrate Me and conditioned with Moisturize Me Conditioner, I loved how slippery my hair felt as I was using the 2 products. I followed up with Uncoiled to detangle then layered the Curl Extender on top as a leave-in. My favorite product is the Curl Extender because the hair was soft and moisturized and my curls were elongated see 1st photo. After my hair was completely dry the Mango pomade worked extremely well to define my curly fro see photo 2 close up. I would recommend this product for anyone that wants only natural products with natural ingredients on their hair. The aroma's are not overbearing and the results will be soft to the touch, moisturized fuller hair.

I brought my daughters to see Danielle today, thanks to all the glowing reviews on NaturallyCurly.com. I was not disapointed. We've been driving from Vegas to Long Beach, CA to see Richie Roman for years, but alas..he's relocating to the east coast. They both cut dry which is essential for curly hair. I'm used to seeing the Deva method, but I had complete confidence in Danielle's technique. She sat down with us for a consultation before the cut..making sure she understood the girls' hair and needs. My youngest is a 3a/3b and my oldest a 3b/3c. My youngest had hair to her waist and wanted it cut above her shoulders (donating to Locks Of Love). She did not have a clear picture of what she wanted other than length. Danielle did an amazing job with her new style. It's balanced, beautiful and flattering. My oldest wanted her A-line bob shaped back up as it was very grown out. It came out beautiful! super short at the nape with long layers at the front to just past her jawline. Exactly what she wanted...an edgier version of what she came in with. Danielle also went over the styling a bit with the girls as well. We will definitely be returning and will be referring our other curly girls to Danielle.

The Art of Hair Coloring

Hair colorist must take into consideration a few things to formulate color that's perfect for your target color..Here are the basics: 1st what is your natural hair color? Do you have existing color on your hair? What is your desired result? All of the above have a natural remaining pigment we must always think about: Natural Levels 1 thru 5 (black-light brown) has red to red orange remaining pigment when lightening. Levels 6-12 (dark blonde-pale blonde) has orange to yellow remaining pigment. What is natural remaining pigment? Its the tone that shows thru when seen in the light. Coloring hair is not only an art, but there is also science behind the formulation.

The Architecture of a Great Hair Cut

Like any great building, a great haircut has to be built on a solid foundation otherwise the haircut will collapse. I'm a hairstylist that enjoys the art of creating beautiful haircuts. One of my favorite educators from Aveda's Global Creative Team is Antoinette Beenders. I attended an advanced cutting and styling class with her and she used an analogy I really liked. She said, "Building a foundation into the hair is much like stacking bricks or pouring cement. If there is no foundation laid we can't build anything on top. As hairstylists, we imagine ourselves on a scaffold redistributing or adding weight to the hair with our scissors, razor or clippers." Antoinette's message was an ahh haa moment for me many years ago and has stayed with me throughout my career . I love being creative with hair color and use advanced techniques, but shaping the hair has always been a passion of mine. Out of the blue India came into my life. I had the pleasure of meeting an amazing young lady that found me on Naturallycurly.com salon finder. India has combination curly hair with a mixture of African American and Indian heritage. Her hair is 3c/4a fine and thick in density. Not only did we discuss similar natural hair tragedies, but discussed a possible natural hair summit here in Las Vegas. Thank you India for bringing an energetic and inspirational push for me to become more active in the Las Vegas Natural hair community. I look forward to creating a You Tube tutorial with you and educating more naturals on how to care for their hair in the desert. You Rock!

A Vacation in Manhattan Halloween 2010 at OneTrueMedia.com

Our intentions while in New York where to keep our eyes open and have a ton of fun, and that's exactly what happened. We paid attention to the little things like the pace of the people walking the streets to the different colors of the local businesses awnings as well as the architecture of the buildings. We loved walking in Manhattan and feeling the culture and vibe of the city. Taking the Subway at first was intimidating until my girl friend and I figured out what we needed to do to get where we wanted to go! We started on 13th street between 2nd and 3rd on the first morning there and ended up in Soho by the afternoon. Walking through Little Italy and actually having brunch there was cool too (sorry to say the food was just okay, but the service was great)! After walking all day we were thankful we wore comfy shoes and bundled up the last days of October in NYC and it was chilly. The final 2 days were filled with subway commutes to Central Park, Ground Zero and as far as the Meat Packing District. Take a look at this video montage and hopefully you will get an idea of the different sights and scenes we explored.

Oprah's Ultimate Favorite things 2010

This morning I'm overwhelmed with emotion after watching Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes. On this show she selects her "Ultimate Favorite Things" for the final season 2010 . Oprah decided to surprise Andre Walker, her hair stylist of 25 years by adding his products on her favorite things show. The best thing that she could do for him was not only help him launch his own product line, but reveal it to millions of people across the world.

During the taping of this show, this is what happened:
It was business as usual for Oprah and her staff as they decide on the final list of her favorite things. Oprah asked Andre to come fix her hair while she was having a final meeting about the show. Oprah says to her staff, "there's one more thing I want to do. Andre Walker is starting his own line of shampoo's, I would like to do his line of shampoo." The staff already new and everyone cheered and congratulated him because he made the cut! His reaction was priceless and he couldn't speak. . Oprah said "nobody deserves it more!" Andre said, "my mind went blank and I couldn't believe it." As he was crying, Oprah jokes around and says, "not a peep, not a poop all of these years and we finally broke him down!"

Andrew has only had Oprah Winfrey as his only client for 25 years! She wanted to give something back to him and this was BIG!

Great job Oprah for giving her hair stylist Andre Walker a chance to see his dream come true.

I'm looking forward to purchasing his products, trying them out and reviewing them here on my blog since Andre makes Oprah's hair look flawless on every show!

I've been a fan of Ergo products since 2005 and I'm glad to hear you are back. I am a hairdresser that specializes in curly hair and I love the Ergo brushes! Before moving to Vegas in 2005, I worked for an Aveda salon in Kansas City, MO. One of my coworkers went to COSMOPROF 2005 in Vegas and bought only 1 of the largest Ergo brushes. She allowed me to try it out and to my immediate delight I fell in love! This product was recommended to me by a local distributor. The goal was to find more products for us naturally curly girls and guys. I tried the product on my hair and below is my professional opinion.

On the front of the bottles the product indicates its Sulfate-Free and 100% Vegan

c1 Gentle Foaming Cleanser (on back) silky, shiny, manageable curls begin with this richly foaming gentle cleanser. Completely sulfate-free, natural coconut derived cleansers gently remove impurities while preserving hydration. Rich argon oil imparts shine and manageability, leaving hair perfectly primed for rich conditioning. Ingredients: Purified Water (Steam Distilled), Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, cocamide MEA, Argan Oil (Moroccan), Glycol Distearate, Amodimethicone, Trideceth 12, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium 10, Fragrance (parfum) Phenoxyethanol, Methylthiazolinone.

Below is my application and review.

The shampoo is rich in texture and has a fruity aroma and lathered up very well. I thought my hair was squeaky clean afterward! Next I applied the conditioner then combed through my hair with a wide tooth comb. After rinsing my hair felt light and silky. I chose the c3 Curl Control Balm and this product initially felt good in my hair and had a lot of slippage. Diffused and viola, soft frizzy naked curls. I did not like what happened to my curls at all. This product reminded me of the Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in Conditioner. It was too light for my hair texture. I tried the entire process again on a different day and sprayed the Curl Conformer Mist. This time instead of just diffusing as is, I twisted my hair in 2x2 square inch sections. The result was fabulous! I loved that my hair looked moisturized and shiny after it completely dried. It didn't feel greasy or sticky, and definitely had some hold.

Although second day hair was a different story, my hair was stiff and felt as if it needed some additional oils to soften the curls. I used the Adagir Argan Oil (a favorite of mine) to add movement to my hair.

I would recommend these products for most curly hair types. Especially if you want a naked result (feels like there is no product on the hair). In addition, the light hold and appearance that the hair is moisturized is what I loved the most. I would definitely retail this product in my salon.

Typically I don't research ingredients but appreciated a few of the natural ingredients found in these products (i.e. Purified Water, Rosemary Extract, Argan Oil, Noniberry Extract and Avocado Oils)

I covered my face because no makeup! lol!

Resolution or Revolution

At this time of year, everyone is busy deciding what they want to do different in the upcoming year. Cleaning out the closets to make room for storing all the Christmas ornaments gets people in the mood for a figurative cleaning out as well.

We are embarking on a new year and new decade. This decade brings with it some blessings and possibly some unwanted baggage as well.

Good question. I had a good experience with the Help Out group (via facebook) a few weeks ago. Myself along with a few other business professionals, gathered together to offer advice on preparing for times of change in our suffering economy. My inspiration was "How to have a good beauty day". The audience was very receptive to all our ideas which included: resume writing, budgeting, pilates and yoga, embracing our youth, and beauty. My goal is to continue to educate and encourage the community and Help Out wherever and however I can. :)

Where was I when I heard the news? I was at home surfing my News Feed on Facebook. Sent an inbox message to a friend for confirmation and less than a minute later he posted R.I.P Teena Marie. Its hard to believe that Teena died at such an early age for reasons unknown.

Some of my childhood memories included me at home singing to her music in front of the mirror. It was 1978 or 1979 when I performed to her hit "Square Biz" in my 6th grade talent show. The fact that she was a white woman meant something to me, but I didn't know what it was exactly at the time. There I was, 9 years old finding out a few years prior I was adopted and my ethnic heritage was unclear, yet could identify with this white woman who had more soul then some of my own black family. It was 2001 when I found out that my biological mother was white (Italian/Irish/Indian) and my biological father (black). I never met my biological mother because she died at 47. I have a feeling that she was a soul sister and loved the Star Child-Teena Marie.

Teena paved the way for many white women to embrace their soulful voices, like Lisa Stansfield, Duffy, Adele, Joss Stone, Christina and Mariah. These women possibly crossed over more quickly into R&B charts because of her. She will be missed, and never forgotten. Hopefully a beautiful tribute will be done soon to show how instrumental she was for in the world of R&B music.

As a 40 year old hair stylist of 20+ years, I find that Middle-Aged Women sit in my chair often times posing the question "am I too old for longer hair?" My response has always been and will always be "its not about your age, its about how you feel while your wearing longer hair. If you feel fabulous and wear it with confidence then who cares what the baby boomers think?

Farouk Systems wins $300 Million Settlement

Finally, Farouk Systems, a beauty company wins a legal battle over identity theft. This is the largest judgment ever issued for trademark infringement. Basically, impostors have stolen internet domain names and also created fake CHI products and Flatirons and sold them under the name CHI for dirt cheap. Not only have these products ruined a lot of hair, but as a salon owner I've lost potential sales of legitimate products and tools.

Pin up Looks and Fall "Foilage"

I've received several requests at my studio salon this week for 40's and 50's pin up hair styles to wear to special events. My question is: What's the push for pinup hairstyles? Is Katie Perry responsible for bringing this look back into pop culture?

What about Rockabilly's? The original term came from a genre of music that has now evolved into a counter-culture of music, style, tattoos, vintage clothing and of course pin up inspired hair.

This time of year brings about a different vibe all together when it comes to hair fashion. Color trends go to darker shades of blonde highlights and richer, warmer reds and brunettes. Lengths become shorter as necklines rise for women and men tend to grow the hair longer to keep those handsome heads warm in the fall and winter months. I'm one of the few women that likes to add hair extensions during the cooler season to change up my looks.

My inspiration comes from classic looks that have been staples for me over time, sleek chignons, big curly ponytail hairpieces and long clip-in hair extensions.I seem to always go with what works for my face shape and body type. Lastly, I love taking advanced coloring and cutting classes to keep my skills sharp and keep my clients happy.

Size does matter...Really?

In the Midwest back in the early 90's, not only was I not skinny enough (size 6 in the photo on the left) but I wasn't black enough or white enough for most modeling agencies. Yes, we've come a long way with more women of color on print, tv and runway. Unfortunately, today in 2010 size does matter, it's the "new discr...imination against women" as it relates to Haute Couture modeling. Will we continue "buying" that the ideal image for women should be size zero and weigh less than 100 pounds in high fashion? Tell me your thoughts... ~Danielle Green

Beauty

When I was asked to write an article on Beauty for The Secret La Revista, I immediately looked up the word in the dictionary and reflected on a childhood lesson from my mother.

Webster’s says;

Beauty <noun>

Definition:

the qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit

Since my mother was a hairdresser in the beauty industry her definition of beauty when I was young was, "It doesn't matter how beautiful you are on the outside...what matters is how beautiful you are on the inside". This thought has echoed in my spirit all my life and helped me to develop my character. Over time I’ve learned how to channel my mind and spirit to radiate beauty from within much like the dictionary definition describes it above.

I decided to follow in my mother's footsteps and become a hairdresser. I saw her ability to express her creativity through hairdressing and I felt a passion to do it as well. I saw how she was able to connect with her clients and bring their beauty out. Working in the industry has allowed to me to not only see but feel what she taught me on a personal and spiritual level. I realize that through working with clients, listening to their issues and transforming their tresses, I too am able to give them a sense of beauty both inside and outside.

In the end, the definition that Webster describes as beauty is seemingly more powerful than I thought when I initially looked it up. What my mom was trying to teach me was congruent to Webster’s definition of the word but exponentially more meaningful because not only is she is my mother, "the expert on beauty" but beauty truly lies within your mind and spirit.

Tip: Become beauty that's lit within and share with others.

My definition: the art of caring for your hair at home or with a professional stylist

Hey there, to my friends with quirky tresses! I know how difficult it can be figuring out what to do with your hair at home, or better yet what might happen in the chair at a hair salon. Just like visiting your doctor or dentist, a knowledgeable hair stylist will find out exactly what to prescribe to help with your hair woes. We know how to assess your hair type as well as how to ask the appropriate questions to find out what you like, and what you don't.

Today at the salon, I over heard some clients talking about their "at home regimen." After listening to their processes I found out that these ladies were in need of some "Hairapy".

A few words of wisdom:

Always seek a professional hair colorist for your hair coloring needs and desires. Over the counter hair color box kits may seem attractive and trustworthy but a kitchen beautician may find themselves in the salon asking for a color correction with a high price tag to fix a mistake.

Do not, I repeat do not try to chemically relax or permanently wave your hair yourself! We all have heard horror stories and may have endured the torture from a over zealous mom that "knows" what she is doing and you better not question her either. Again, leave these treatments to the professionals because these products contain harmful chemicals that could destroy your hair and skin if not used properly.

May I also stress that you consider donating your "at home" scissors and thinning shears to the arts and craft section of your home, don't use on your hair. It's worth every penny to invest in a haircut every 5-10 weeks depending your hair style. For

those of you with a fringe or "bang", most salons will give a complimentary bang trim or charge a minimal fee for the quick service. Otherwise, I think you know what an at home bang trim could possibly lead too...

Next, NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER brush your hair while it is wet! The hair is at a weaker state and fragile when it is wet. Instead use a wide tooth comb or a pick and start de-tangling the hair by working from the ends up to the roots. Use smaller sections so you will have control of the hair.

Lastly, Pahhhleeeease turn down the heat on those flat irons and curling irons! Hair is similar to fabric and when the heat is too high it can burn the hair. Imagine putting a cloth in the oven and setting the temperature to 450 degrees, what will happen? FIRE! Better yet, a "pocket curl," (a curl that sticks to the curling iron and detaches from your head, so you put it in your pocket as if it never happened) lol!

There are many products available to protect the hair from heat elements on the market like Aveda's Brilliant Damage Control Spray, or Its at 10 Leave-In Conditioner. Knowing what products and tools to use can prevent dehydrating the hair which will ultimately protect and promote beautifully, healthy, shiny hair.

Stick to these few tips and you will be on your way to keeping your hair strong and healthy. Remember, sometimes it's very easy to slack off on purchasing the better products for our hair.
